Charmingly unspoiled village pub in the middle of Essex countryside - don't be misled by its Hertfordshire postal address! Slightly unpredictable atmosphere - can initially be unnerving for strangers. However, it's worth braving the occasional stare from inhabitants - if only to enjoy the genuinely local Saffron Brewery real ale on sale. Food is generally ambitious and rarely disappoints. Theme nights and events are scheduled and often well-supported. Car parking and outside seating area - directly opposite pretty village church. Surely worth a bit of Sunday worship?
